PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across five states and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on Tuesday (Aug 18).

In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Penang, alongside Kuala Muda and Yan in Kedah.

In Perak, an initial warning is in place for Bagan Datuk until 12pm, while a separate alert extends until 1pm for Kerian, Larut Matang, Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah and Hilir Perak.

In the central region, severe weather expected until 12pm covers Klang, Kuala Langat, Sepang, Kuala Selangor, Petaling, Sabak Bernam and Gombak in Selangor, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
