SEREMBAN: Paroi assemblyman Kamarol Ridzuan Mohd Zain has been appointed as the deputy Speaker of the Negri Sembilan state legislative assembly.
His nomination was proposed by Mentri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim and seconded by Linggi assemblyman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli during a special sitting following the swearing-in of state assemblymen on Monday (Aug 17).
He succeeds Datuk Mohd Asna Amin, who currently serves as the state industry, technology, innovation and digital committee chairman.
Kamarol Ridzuan, who is the state PAS deputy commissioner, first secured the Paroi seat during the 2023 state election and successfully defended it with a 16,959-vote majority in a three-cornered contest in the Aug 1 state polls.
State legislative assembly secretary Mohd Amin Ludin confirmed to the house that only one nomination was submitted for the deputy Speaker position.
Earlier during the session, former Kota assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Awaludin Said was elected as the 16th Speaker of the state assembly, returning for his second term in the role. Awaludin, who is also Rembau Umno deputy chief, previously served as Speaker from June 2013 to April 2018.
In his acceptance speech, Awaludin pledged to execute his duties with loyalty and uphold the state constitution.
In the recent state election, Barisan Nasional secured 18 seats, Pakatan Harapan won 11, and Perikatan Nasional obtained seven.
