SEREMBAN: Police are investigating two cases involving alleged sedition, defamation and false statements concerning the state royal institution that have gone viral on social media, says state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad.
He said a 48-year-old Malaysian man had been detained to assist in investigations, while police were tracking down the owner of another social media account suspected of uploading offensive content.
“We have also taken note of the decree by the Malay Rulers conveyed through a statement by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal on Oct 14, which called on all parties to prioritise wisdom, patience and respect for the etiquette, customs and dignity of the royal institution.
“Any differences in stance must be resolved through legal and authorised channels in accordance with the law and relevant provisions,” he said in a statement.
DCP Alzafny said the two cases were being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
He also advised the public against speculating or spreading unverified content that could cause confusion, create tension or jeopardise public order.
He said stern action would be taken against anyone who intentionally creates, uploads, shares or disseminates content containing seditious statements, criminal intimidation or false information, or which threatens public order.
