SUBANG JAYA: A man rescued by police less than 48 hours after being abducted last week has now been detained under preventive drug laws after investigators uncovered ties between his kidnapping and a drug syndicate.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said action was taken against the victim under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 (LLPK) on Tuesday (July 21) following a joint probe with the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID).
"Further investigations identified elements of drug trafficking in this case," Comm Kumar told a press conference at the Subang Jaya district police headquarters on Wednesday (July 22).
He added that checks on employment records and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions failed to reveal a permanent occupation for the victim, whose assets are currently being investigated to determine if they played a role in the abduction motive.
Meanwhile, police have arrested two more local men, including a former policeman dismissed over a drug offence, bringing the total number of suspects detained to eight. Both new suspects have been remanded for 10 days.
"All eight suspects, as well as the victim, tested positive for drugs during screening," Comm Kumar said, adding that several suspects had prior records for violent crimes and drug offences.
On July 18, police initially arrested six individuals—five men and one woman—and rescued the victim from a residential unit in i-City, Shah Alam, where officers also seized various drugs, mobile phones, and vehicles. The kidnappers had originally demanded a RM7 million ransom.
The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961 alongside the ongoing NCID probe.
