TAWAU: A mechanic has been charged in the Magistrate's Court here with trafficking 74.87kg of methamphetamine.
Sopian Mustafa, 40, nodded to indicate he understood the charge after it was read out to him before Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum on Wednesday (July 22).
No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The accused, an Indonesian, was charged with trafficking the drugs in the parking area of a building on Jalan Tun Hamdan here at 10.30pm on July 12.
The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, carries the death penalty, or life in prison with at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
The court denied bail and fixed Aug 20 for case mention. – Bernama
