GEORGE TOWN: A search for a place to watch the FIFA World Cup final became an unforgettable night for Spanish tourist David Sanchez, who found himself celebrating Spain’s victory with hundreds of Malaysians at the Esplanade.
“We had spent the morning exploring George Town and enjoying its famous food. While looking for a place to watch the match, we found out there would be a giant screen here.
“We also met a few other Spaniards, but we never imagined the Esplanade would be packed with so many lively and happy people,” said the 50-year-old, who was travelling with his wife, three children and another family of five, yesterday.
Instead of watching the match in a bar or hotel, the group joined hundreds of people at a giant screening of the match to witness Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina.
Sanchez said what impressed him most was not just Spain’s triumph, but the atmosphere created by the local crowd during the event hosted by Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“There were supporters wearing shirts of both teams, but everyone was festive and respectful. Around us, many locals were cheering for Spain and they made us feel at home.
When Ferran Torres found the net, Sanchez said the Esplanade erupted.
“It was madness. There were screams, hugs and so much joy.
“We have had an incredible two weeks travelling around Malaysia, but celebrating Spain’s World Cup victory here in Penang is something we will carry in our hearts for the rest of our lives.”
Also soaking up the electric atmosphere was college student RC Surya, 19, from Butterworth, who came with 12 friends from his polytechnic in Balik Pulau.
“It was such a lively atmosphere.
“People from all races came together because of football and everyone cheered throughout the night.”
Surya, an avid badminton player, said he hopes more public screenings would be organised for other major sporting events.
“There are many international badminton tournaments too.
“If those matches could also be screened like this, I think more people would take up sports and spend more time together,” he said.
Spain claimed their second FIFA World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
