SHAH ALAM: Police have foiled attempts smuggle a total of 247.8kg of ganja worth RM19.82mil at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and arrested seven suspects.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said one Malaysian woman and six foreign nationals comprising four men and two women were arrested, believed to drug mules.

He said the suspects were arrested on July 11, 13, 14 and 17 in operations carried out jointly by the KLIA police headquarters Narcotics Crime Investigation Division and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd auxiliary police.

"In total, police recovered 393 packets of suspected cannabis from the suspects' luggage, believed to be destined for Europe," he said during a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters on Tuesday (July 21).

Shazeli said three foreign suspects also tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while another was identified as a repeat offender.

He said initial investigations found that the suspects were paid between RM6,000 and RM15,000 each, with all entering Malaysia on social visit passes.

Police also seized foreign currency in various denominations and two necklaces worth RM3,000.

Shazeli urged the public not to carry luggage or items belonging to others without knowing their contents.
