KUALA LUMPUR: The government has approved 573 development projects worth RM73mil in Kampung Baru Cina and 21 projects worth RM2mil in Kampung India this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said the projects cover infrastructure, housing assistance and public amenities.
She said the development projects for Kampung Baru Cina, now known as Kampung Baru, fall under three main categories, including infrastructure, home repair assistance and new house construction.
"The first comprises 366 infrastructure projects, of which 148 have been completed, while 218 are still underway.
"The second category involves 197 home repair assistance projects, with 47 completed and 150 currently in progress.
"The third consists of 10 new house construction projects, all of which have been approved but have yet to commence," she said during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (June 29).
For Kampung India, she said the Local Government Department has approved 21 development projects in 18 villages across six states, including Johor, Melaka, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Negri Sembilan.
"To date, five projects have been completed, 13 are under construction, two are undergoing the procurement process, while one remains at the planning stage," she added.
Aiman Athirah said RM328.9mil had been allocated for Kampung Baru development projects between 2023 and 2025, benefiting residents in 613 Kampung Baru settlements nationwide.
The allocation comprised RM107.1mil for 593 projects in 2023, RM118.8mil for 631 projects in 2024, and RM102.9mil for 560 development projects in 2025.
For Kampung India, she said the ministry began administering a special allocation of RM15mil in 2025.
"The funding has been channelled through two key initiatives, benefiting 22,104 recipients in 50 identified Kampung India settlements through 87 projects.
"Of the total, RM10mil was allocated under the ministry's 2025 budget, covering 54 projects.
"The remaining RM5mil was channelled through the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra)," she said.
Responding to a supplementary question from Sungai Siput MP S. Kesavan on the disparity in allocations between Kampung Baru Cina and Kampung India, Aiman Athirah said the two programmes were not directly comparable.
She said development programmes for Kampung India only came under the ministry's purview in 2025, while the Kampung Baru programme has long been established.
"The ministry is continuously improving the programme. We are aware of the issues raised.
"However, this will require the cooperation of all parties, and the honourable member can also assist us in this effort," she said.
