Come back to vote, DAP candidate urges Johoreans

YONG PENG: DAP's Yong Peng candidate Yong Hui Yi has called on Johoreans working outside the state, particularly in Singapore, to return home to cast their ballots on July 11, saying higher voter turnout could make the difference.

"Please ask your children, relatives and friends working or studying outside Johor to return home on July 11 because every vote matters," she said at a ceramah in Kangkar Baru on Saturday night (June 28).

Turning to local issues, Yong said improving infrastructure would be among her priorities if elected, pointing to poorly lit roads linking Yong Peng with nearby towns such as Ayer Hitam, Batu Pahat, Labis and Paloh.

She said Yong Peng's strategic location and connectivity gave it strong development potential, adding that she would unveil her election manifesto on Sunday.

Meanwhile, DAP vice-chairman Khoo Poay Tiong, who joined the ceramah in support of Yong's campaign, also urged Johoreans living outside the state to return home to vote, saying a higher turnout could make the difference in a closely fought contest.

Referring to the ongoing World Cup, Khoo said football had shown that “surprise results were always possible,” expressing confidence that Yong Peng could also spring an upset if enough voters returned to cast their ballots.

Khoo also highlighted Yong's political experience, saying she had previously worked with three DAP Members of Parliament, including Deputy Ministers Liew Chin Tong and Teo Nie Ching, and was well equipped to serve the constituency.

Yong, who previously served as a special affairs officer to Deputy Minister and Kulai MP Teo, is making her electoral debut against incumbent Ling Tian Soon from Barisan Nasional.
