Johor polls: From 23 to 73, young blood and veterans join the fray


BATU PAHAT: At just 23, Danish Hossman Abd Rahman will make history as the youngest candidate contesting the 16th Johor state election.

The Pakatan Harapan candidate has been entrusted to contest the Johor Lama seat, where he faces a three-cornered contest against incumbent Norlizah Noh of Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional's Aisah Esa.

Norlizah retained the seat with a 6,039-vote majority in the last state election. 

Johor Lama, under the Kota Tinggi parliamentary constituency, has 32,716 registered voters.

For comparison, the youngest candidates in the 2022 Johor state election were Muhammad Airel Zabridin of Pejuang in Tangkak and BN's Kelly Chye Pei Yee in Mengkibol, both aged 26.

At the other end of the age spectrum is Perikatan's Lim Chin Eng @ Roland Lim, 73, the oldest candidate in this election.

Lim will contest the Stulang seat in a four-cornered fight against incumbent Andrew Chen Kah Eng of Pakatan, Barisan's Bong Seng Heng and Parti Bersama Malaysia's Stanley Tan. Andrew won the seat in the previous election with a 2,866-vote majority.

Stulang, under the Johor Baru parliamentary constituency, has 60,029 registered voters. In the 2022 state election, the oldest candidate was PN's Tosrin Jarvanthi, then aged 71.

Women account for 34 of the 172 candidates contesting this election, with Pakatan fielding the highest number of female candidates at 12. By comparison, 37 of the 239 candidates in the previous election were women.

The Election Commission has set July 7 for early voting and July 11 as polling day.- Bernama
