JOHOR BARU: It will be a five cornered-cornered fight for the Puteri Wangsa state seat in the 16th Johor state election.
Returning officer Zulkurnain Abdul Rahman said five candidates filed their nominations at the SMK Bandar Dato Onn nomination centre here as the deadline closed at 10am on Saturday (June 27).
They are Rashifa Aljunied from Muda, Barisan Nasional candidate Teow Chia Ling, Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr Maszlee Malik and Parti Bersama Malaysia candidate Nicholas Paul Vincent.
Independent candidate Wang Wee Siong also filed his nomination to contest the seat, which has the second highest number of voters in Johor at 128,723.
In the 15th Johor state polls held on March 12, 2022, Puteri Wangsa saw a six-cornered fight.
The seat was won by Muda’s Amira Aisya with 22,884 votes with a 7,114-vote majority against Barisan’s Ng Yew Aik from MCA (15,770 votes).
Perikatan Nasional’s Gerakan candidate Loh Kah Yong received 8,957 votes followed by Parti Bangsa Malaysia’s Steven Choong Shiau Yoon (2,471), Pejuang’s Khairil Anwar Razali (2,468) and independent candidate Adzrin Adam (398).
Puteri Wangsa, under the Tebrau parliamentary constituency, has 11,573 voters aged 18 to 20 years old while the largest chunk of voters in the area are aged 21 to 29 years old at 32,776 people.
Johor’s 56-seat state legislative assembly was dissolved on June 1.
Voters will cast their vote on July 11 after a two-week campaigning period, with early voting set for July 7.
