Johor polls: Onn Hafiz faces off against Nor Hafiz in straight fight for Machap

SIMPANG RENGGAM: The Machap state seat is set to see a straight fight between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan.

Returning officer Mohd Izzul Helmi Ahmad said the Election Commission received nomination papers from Pakatan candidate Nor Hafiz Roslan at 9.03am while Barisan candidate Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi submitted his papers at 9.06am.

"With this, I announce that Onn Hafiz of Barisan and Nor Hafiz of Pakatan are the two candidates for the Machap state seat," he announced at the Dewan Muafakat Simpang Renggam nomination centre on Saturday (June 27).

In the previous state election, Onn Hafiz, who is the incumbent assemblyman, won in a four-cornered fight.

He ran against Perikatan Nasional's Azlisham Azahar, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air's Datuk Dr Sharuddin Md Salleh and Muda's R. Sangaran.

The dissolution of the Johor state assembly was announced by Onn Hafiz on June 1 following the consent of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

The Election Commission has set July 11 as polling day, with nomination day on June 27 and early voting on July 7.

Johor last held a state election on March 12, 2022, when Barisan secured a two-thirds majority after winning 40 of the 56 seats.

Pakatan won 12 seats, Perikatan secured three seats, while Muda won one seat.
