A TEENAGER in India who fell into a lake and his mother who rushed in to save him both drowned, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Sithu, a 14-year-old student in Chittoor city, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, had visited his mother Revathy, 35, who was working at a padi field in their village.

The mother and son had lunch together and Sithu later went to wash his hands at a nearby lake.

However, the boy lost his footing and fell into the lake.

He was unable to climb out so his mother rushed to try and pull him out.

Both of them were unable to get out and drowned.

Villagers who discovered the tragedy managed to retrieve the bodies, but it was too late to save them.

The local police have ordered an autopsy on the remains of the two victims.
