Kedah govt keeps status quo despite PAS ending ties with Bersatu

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah government remains stable despite PAS ending its political cooperation with Bersatu with immediate effect.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said two Bersatu state exco members would continue carrying out their duties as usual.

He said no changes would be made to the state administration as long as the two Bersatu assemblymen continued supporting the state government.

"For now, they remain as exco members and there are no changes as long as they support the state government.

"The state administration is operating as usual with the existing exco line-up," Sanusi said on Tuesday (June 9).

Kedah's Darul Aman Information Secretariat reported that Sanusi said Bersatu representatives holding positions in the state administration, including local council members and Village Development and Security Committee (MKK) members, would continue serving until any new decision was made.

The two Bersatu representatives in the state administration are Bukit Kayu Hitam assemblyman Datuk Halimaton Shaadiah Saad, who oversees welfare, women, family and community affairs as well as unity, and Kubang Rotan assemblyman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin, who heads the tourism, culture and entrepreneurship portfolio.

Bersatu previously had three exco members in Kedah, including Suka Menanti assemblyman Dzowahir Ab Ghani, who held the agriculture, plantation and transport portfolio before he was sacked from the party last month.

On Monday, PAS announced it had ended political cooperation with Bersatu with immediate effect.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the decision was made at a special PAS central working committee meeting after considering reports, studies and current assessments of the relationship between the two parties.

The meeting endorsed a decision made by the Syura Ulama Council on June 2 regarding policy, legal and public interest considerations linked to the cooperation.

Following the move, PAS said it would explore new forms of political understanding and electoral cooperation ahead of the next state elections and the 16th General Election.

The party said it remained open to academics, professionals, political leaders and community activists who wished to join PAS.

PAS and Bersatu have been key components of Perikatan Nasional since 2020, with Gerakan joining the coalition in February 2021.

Kedah's 36-seat state assembly now comprises 21 PAS representatives, nine from Bersatu, two independents (after being sacked from Bersatu), one from Gerakan and three from Pakatan Harapan.
