KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has reiterated its commitment to remain in the unity government until the end of its term.
Party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that despite differences in views and opinions, Umno members would remain professional in carrying out their duties.
“Our position is that we will not oppose any particular individual, especially the Prime Minister, because the resolution made at the assembly must be respected, where we will continue to remain together in this Malaysian unity government until the end of the term.
“We also do not know when the term will end, so we will continue to remain in it.
“As long as we are in it, there will certainly be differences of opinion, but we are professional members of the Cabinet and a professional party leadership.
“Of course, we have the position that differences of opinion must be respected, just as we respect the differences of opinion expressed by them,” he said at a press conference after the 2026 Umno General Assembly here on Saturday (Sept 12).
Earlier, in his winding-up speech, Ahmad Zahid issued a blunt challenge to those calling for the party to leave the unity government, saying Umno should be formally removed from Putrajaya if its support was no longer needed.
The Deputy Prime Minister said this could be done either through an early general election to seek a fresh mandate or by tabling a motion of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.
“If we are asked to leave, the basic logic is that a fresh mandate should be obtained.
“There are only two options. Either obtain a fresh mandate through a second general election, or officially remove us and table a vote of no confidence,” he said.
His remarks were met with shouts of “bubar” (dissolve) from the delegates.
