KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will make “Tekad 16” its official programme to gear up for the 16th General Election (GE16), says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said the programme would focus on five key points, including strengthening the party, closing ranks, strengthening its election machinery, refining its strategy and reaching out to the people, especially the youth.

"What is our resolve? Tekad 16.

"What is our resolve? T-E-K-A-D:

T – Teguhkan Parti (strengthen the party),

E – Eratkan Saf (close ranks),

K – (strengthen our position in the political field),

A – Anjalkan Strategi (refine the strategy), and

D – Dekati Rakyat (reach out to the people)," he said in his winding-up speech at the 2026 Umno General Assembly today (Sept 12).

Ahmad Zahid said Tekad 16 would serve as the party's official programme ahead of GE16, providing a framework for its election preparations.

He also called for any political cooperation or understanding to be built on mutual respect, honesty and a commitment to the interests of the wider ummah.

"Hopefully, this cooperation or understanding can be built on mutual respect, without betrayal, and with honesty for the benefit of the ummah as a whole," he said.

Zahid said unity did not require political parties to become identical, but required them to be mature enough to find common ground ahead of future elections.
