Gerakan remains committed to Perikatan amid PAS, Bersatu split, says Lau

PETALING JAYA: Gerakan remains committed to Perikatan Nasional despite the latest developments involving PAS and Bersatu, says party president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.

“We respect the role and contributions of both PAS and Bersatu within Perikatan,” he said in a statement on June 9.

“At this stage, Gerakan will await further official clarification from the relevant parties before making any further comments on the matter,” he added.

“With the Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections drawing nearer, and the nation's political landscape continuing to evolve towards the next general election, now is the time for all parties to focus on the greater responsibilities before us.

Earlier, PAS terminated its political cooperation with Bersatu.

Its party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said this after a special meeting of the PAS central working committee at the party’s headquarters on June 8.

The party endorsed the decision of the Syura Council of Ulama meeting on June 2 regarding policy, legal (syariah), and public interest (maslahah) considerations concerning our political cooperation, based on the principle of Muslim unity.

Lau added that unity among component parties was crucial to ensuring that our coalition remains a viable choice for the rakyat.

“Gerakan will continue to play a constructive role in strengthening Perikatan as an inclusive political coalition that can be accepted by Malaysians of all races and religions.

“At the same time, we remain committed to political stability, principled leadership, and putting the interests of the people above all else,” said the party president.
