AGC orders investigation as suspect’s remand extended
PETALING JAYA: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has directed police to classify investigations into the Simpang Renggam multi-vehicle crash that claimed five lives, including a family of four, as murder and reckless driving causing death.
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed the directive, saying the AGC would examine all relevant aspects of the case.
“The AGC will take into account the facts and other pertinent considerations before a final decision is made,” he said.
The crash occurred at KM27 Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam in Kluang, Johor, at about 1.15pm on Monday.
Following the crash, a 19-year-old male was remanded for two days to assist investigations.
Police arrested him shortly after the crash, which also claimed the life of his 22-year-old brother.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two brothers were allegedly driving recklessly at high speed when one of the vehicles lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with three other vehicles.
The impact resulted in the deaths of four people who were in a vehicle, while the driver of the vehicle that lost control succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital.
The family who died were identified as Mohd Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36; his wife Nor Azlina Abd Latif, 33; her mother Semek Mat Soh, 73; and Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, 10.
They were reported to be travelling from Melaka to Kota Tinggi when the tragedy occurred.
Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said police obtained a one-day extension of the remand against the suspect.
“The investigation papers will be referred to the Johor prosecutor’s office for further action and directions,” he said.
