Remand extended for teen driver in fatal Kluang crash


KLUANG: Investigation papers on a fatal crash that claimed the lives of five people, including four family members, along Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam will be referred to the Johor prosecution office.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said police had obtained a one-day extension of the remand order against the 19-year-old suspect, who was driving a Mercedes-Benz involved in the incident.

He said the remand application was allowed by magistrate Mujib Saroji to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

“The investigation papers will be submitted to the Johor prosecution office today for further action and directions,” he said when contacted here on Wednesday (June 3).

On Monday, police arrested the teenager to assist in investigations into the multi-vehicle crash along Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam.

Preliminary investigations found that the suspect was allegedly driving a Mercedes-Benz A250 recklessly and dangerously alongside a BMW 530e driven by his 22-year-old brother.

The crash involved five vehicles and resulted in the deaths of five people.

Four members of the same family, including a 10-year-old girl, were pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe head and body injuries.

The driver of the BMW 530e also died while being transported to the hospital.
