MELAKA: Skilled local workers in Melaka are manufacturing a key component for luxury Swiss watchmaker Rolex, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh (pic) revealed Saturday (Sept 5).
Speaking at a youth town hall session at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh, Ab Rauf said the manufacturing operation remains confidential but demonstrates the state's advanced industrial capabilities and high-technology workforce.
"I cannot disclose where because it is confidential, but I officiated at the facility and witnessed the production process," Ab Rauf said, adding that international manufacturers have strong confidence in local talent to handle world-class technology.
The Chief Minister noted that the presence of high-value manufacturing refutes the perception that local employment is limited to traditional sectors. He highlighted other multinational operations in the state, including an Ayer Keroh facility that has produced microchips for passports and national identity cards used in over 40 countries for nearly three decades.
Ab Rauf urged young Malaysians to acquire industry-relevant expertise in advanced manufacturing to capitalise on growing opportunities in high-tech sectors.
