Ab Rauf named BN election director for Melaka state election

MELAKA: Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh will lead Barisan Nasional’s campaign during the 16th Melaka state election, taking over as election director from Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the appointment of the coalition's Melaka chief was unanimously endorsed at a coalition leadership meeting at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh here on Thursday night (Oct 22).

“I confirm that Ab Rauf is the election director for the Melaka state election, taking over from "Tok Mat" (Mohamad Hasan).

"As Foreign Minister, Tok Mat has numerous overseas commitments during the campaign, including attending a Commonwealth conference and representing the country at regional meetings,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and leaders of Barisan component parties were also present.

Meanwhile, Ab Rauf thanked the leadership for the appointment

"I will carry out this responsibility to the best of my ability,” said the caretaker Chief Minister.

He also said that Melaka Barisan’s election machinery was prepared for the upcoming state elections.

“We have agreed on many matters concerning the coordination of duties and responsibilities, including the roles of component parties assigned to support election work in the state.

“I hope this understanding will put us in a strong position to achieve our objectives and demonstrate our ability to work together in this election,” he said.

On candidate selection, he said the shortlisted names were still undergoing screening.

He declined to elaborate when asked whether Barisan would field high-profile candidates.

The Election Commission has set Nov 14 for polling, with nominations on Oct 31 and early voting on Nov 10.
