PETALING JAYA: Building owners and management bodies may soon receive tax incentives under a Housing and Local Government Ministry proposal to accelerate green building adoption.
Its Minister, Nga Kor Ming, announced at the Malaysia Property Expo 2026 on Friday (Sept 4) that the proposal was submitted to the Finance Ministry on Sept 3 to make green certification more financially viable.
“Green practices should not be viewed simply as an additional cost,” he said and added that the ministry plans to establish a dedicated division to oversee green building rating tools across the country.
Nga said the ministry will introduce a big data-driven model to determine housing affordability based on localised income levels, purchasing power, and regional transport costs.
The government is also expanding access to home loans for self-employed and gig economy workers under the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme, targeting 100,000 beneficiaries by year-end.
To curb abandoned housing projects and improve property management, the ministry is pursuing legislative reforms, including the proposed Real Property Development Act and Rental Tenancy Act.
