Over 1,700 ailing housing projects rescued

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,700 private housing developments projects have been revived by a government task force for sick and abandoned projects at the end of August, says the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

According to minister Nga Kor Ming, 1,726 housing projects have been successfully revived, comprising 199,643 housing units with a gross development value (GDV) of RM158.16 bil.

Responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Nga said 147 “sick” housing projects were rescued, involving 29,900 units with a GDV of RM40.92 bil.

Nga added that 1,542 sick housing projects were fully completed and received their Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC).

This comprised 163,621 housing units with a GDV of RM115.74bil.

On abandoned housing projects, he said 37 have been revived, with it comprising 6,122 housing units with a GDV of RM1.504bil either through physical project completion or providing benefits to home buyers.

“We cannot take sick or abandoned housing projects lightly, and will continue monitoring these situations to ensure the necessary measures are taken in accordance with the ministry’s jurisdiction,” he said as he underlined Malaysia’s aims to completely eradicate all sick and abandoned housing projects by 2030.

He said several measures have been introduced to achieve this target, including new housing monitoring systems aimed at protecting homebuyers and developers.

The minister also said that an option-to-purchase and option-to-build scheme is expected to be launched next month.
