Electricity tariffs, data centres, haze impact among key issues in Dewan Rakyat today

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat is expected to discuss several key issues on Thursday (Oct 15), including increases in domestic electricity tariffs, the economic value of data centre investments, aviation safety and the impact of haze on public health.

According to the Order Paper on Parliament's official portal, during the Minister's Question Time, Azli Yusof (PH-Shah Alam) will seek an explanation from the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation on the factors behind the increase in domestic electricity charges and the Energy Commission's assurance that about 85 per cent of households would be shielded from the impact of the adjustment through the Energy Efficiency Incentive.

Datuk Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (PN-Dungun) will ask about the Youth and Sports Ministry's assessment of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 at the Sepang International Circuit, covering the event's effectiveness, operational preparedness, stakeholder coordination and proposed improvements.

Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri (GPS-Betong) will ask the Transport Minister to clarify the safety audit records, monitoring audits and latest inspection carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) on the operator of helicopter 80-105 9M-LLF following the crash in Long Lellang.

During the Oral Question-and-Answer session, Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang) will ask how the net value added by data centre investments is measured after accounting for resource use, incentives, employment, local content and the country's opportunity costs, following the approval of RM385.7bil in investments since 2021.

Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah) will ask about the Health Ministry's measures to address the impact of haze on public health, including cooperation with the Department of Environment and relevant agencies to monitor air quality, issue health advisories, and protect vulnerable groups.

Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) will seek an update on the growing misuse of synthetic drugs in Sarawak and the effectiveness of measures taken by the Royal Malaysia Police, while Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PN-Setiu) will ask about proposed amendments to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to enable companies and importers that repeatedly violate laws on illegal electronic waste to be blacklisted.

Meanwhile, Datuk Willie Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) will ask about efforts to strengthen the legal and policy framework for national unity when dealing with sensitive issues involving religion, race and the royal institution (3R), including a proposal to introduce a comprehensive National Unity Act.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting will then proceed with the first reading of the Adoption (Amendment) Bill 2026, followed by the fourth day of debate on the Supply Bill (Budget) 2027.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting runs for 37 days until Dec 8. – Bernama
