Helium tank explosion kills welder at Sungai Chua factory

KAJANG: A welder was killed in a helium gas tank explosion at a factory in Sungai Chua here on Friday (Oct 23).

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the department received a report on the incident at 11.50am.

“Fire engines from the Kajang Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at noon and found a 49-year-old local man seriously injured.

“At about 12.50pm, the victim, who had sustained severe injuries to his waist and was bleeding heavily, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Health Ministry medical officer,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Ashrul Riezal said the victim was believed to have been carrying out welding work at the premises, which also operated as a scrap disposal factory, when the incident occurred.

He said only one person was involved in the incident and the Fire and Rescue Department ended its operation shortly afterwards before handing over further action to the relevant agencies.
