Teen remanded over crash

KLUANG: A teenage driver has been remanded for two days to assist police investigations into a crash that killed his elder brother and a family of four in Simpang Renggam.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the 19-year-old was remanded following his arrest after the accident at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam at about 1.15pm on Monday.

Preliminary investigations found that the suspect and his 22-year-old brother were allegedly speeding in separate luxury cars.

“The older brother lost control of his vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and collided with four other vehicles before plunging into a ravine,” he said yesterday.

“One of the vehicles involved was carrying a 36-year-old man, his 33-year-old wife, a 73-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl. All four died at the scene from severe head and body injuries.”

ACP Bahrin said the suspect’s brother also died while being transported to hospital.

He said two passengers in another vehicle, an 11-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl, suffered head injuries and are receiving treatment in the red zone of Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom.

Several other victims, aged between 22 and 57, sustained facial and leg injuries and are being treated at the same hospital.

Two of the motorists will be receiving benefits under the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) Non-Employment Injury Scheme or Lindung 24 Jam, since it came into force on June 1.

The suspect has been arrested and tested negative for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Sections 41(1) and 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by dangerous driving and reckless driving that endangers other road users.

The offences carry a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000, he said.
