KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is seen as a huge market by leading international companies in the fast-paced energy technology industry.

ENERtec Asia 2026 is the culmination of Asean’s leading energy technology exhibition with its first-ever immersive industry gathering that opened yesterday at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Organised by Informa Markets Malaysia and co-hosted by The Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia (TEEAM), ENERtec Asia 2026 is expected to welcome more than 12,000 industry professionals from 60 participating countries and regions, featuring 1,000 exhibiting brands across seven exhibition halls.

It brings together solution providers, technology innovators, investors and industry leaders to showcase next-generation energy solutions across renewable energy, grid modernisation, industrial energy efficiency, decarbonisation and AI-enabled technologies.

Informa Markets event manager Angeline Tang said it was crucial for the country to build the industry base solidly.

“So this year, you would see a lot of the battery energy storage system (BESS) companies coming in. All these international companies see Malaysia as a big market.

“We are seeing an urgent demand for energy transition following many other issues around the world. Energy transition is no longer just about climate issues, it is also that everything close to you is right at your doorstep.

”So everybody should think about redefining the meaning of energy transition because it is no longer just an ambition but relates to your ringgit and sen.

“From conversation with clients, Malaysia’s position in terms of energy shows the government’s push for the industry.”

She also said Malaysia is one of the places in the world for energy transition and green energy ambition associated with AI.

Asked about the current crisis with energy supplies due to the conflict in the Middle East, Tang pointed out that Malaysia was lucky to have its own oil and gas but it was always good to diversify by putting eggs in different baskets with various kinds of energy resources.

With the theme Energy & AI: The Synergy for Energy Transition, this year’s edition comes at a pivotal moment as Malaysia is rapidly accelerating efforts to position itself as a regional hub for AI, cloud computing, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres.

The exponential expansion of digital infrastructure, particularly within Johor and other emerging industrial corridors, has intensified discussions surrounding electricity supply adequacy, renewable energy deployment, grid modernisation and long-term infrastructure readiness.

These priorities took centre stage at WATT’S NEXT, ENERtec Asia’s flagship conference programme.

Industry leaders gathered to examine the vital role of renewable energy integration, BESS, and grid modernisation in supporting the next wave of AI-driven industrial and digital growth.

Beyond high-level dialogue, ENERtec Asia 2026 also served as a catalyst for immediate cross-sector collaboration.

A highlight of the opening day was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between CATL, the world’s leading battery manufacturer and energy storage solutions provider, and Leaders Energy, one of Malaysia’s premier renewable energy developers.

ENERtec Asia 2026 is held in strategic collaboration with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority.

It is endorsed by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation and the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, with support from the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau.
