JOHOR BARU: The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 1,987 summonses in the first two days of its special Hari Raya Aidiladha enforcement operation statewide.
Johor JPJ director Zulkarnain Yasin said the operation, which began on Sunday (May 24), would continue until this coming Sunday (May 31) to ensure smoother and safer travel for road users during the festive season.
He added that the special operation was aimed at improving compliance with road laws while increasing public awareness of road safety and responsibility.
“The department will continue strengthening enforcement efforts from time to time as a proactive measure to reduce traffic offences and ensure the safety of all road users, which will contribute towards reducing road accidents and fatalities,” he said on Tuesday (May 26).
Zulkarnain added that a total of 17,236 vehicles were inspected between May 24 and May 25, with enforcement action taken against 1,205 vehicles.
“Motorcycles recorded the highest number of offences at 513 cases, followed by cars (456), goods vehicles (130), buses (16) and other vehicles (37).
“JPJ also seized 33 vehicles found to be unsafe or unfit for the road, comprising 15 cars, eight motorcycles and eight workers’ buses,” he said.
Zulkarnain said among the main offences detected were driving without a competent driving licence (410 cases), expired road tax (402), and operating vehicles without insurance coverage (342).
He added that another 28 cases involved drivers operating vehicles without a vocational licence.
“The department also recorded 145 cases involving nine major traffic offences, including failing to wear seat belts or helmets, using mobile phones while driving, running red lights, dangerous queue-cutting from the left lane, driving in emergency lanes and overtaking on double lines.
A total of 393 technical offences were also detected, including non-compliant registration plates, tinted windows, tyre maintenance failures and illegal vehicle modifications,” he said.
Zulkarnain also said public awareness on the “Perception of Being Caught” (POBC) had increased to 93% during the two-day operation period.
In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha, he advised motorists to ensure their vehicles were properly maintained, plan their journeys in advance, and get sufficient rest before travelling.
Road users were also urged to stop at rest and service areas if tired and to practise tolerance and prudent driving.
The public is also advised to channel complaints related to traffic offences in real time through the MyJPJ application or via email to aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my, together with complete details of the complaint.
