Ag Mohd Tahir convicted under anti-money laundering act

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Water Department director Ag Mohd Tahir has been sentenced to a total of 96 years in jail and fined a total of RM284.3mil, with a default sentence of 78 months’ jail, after he was found guilty under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUA) 2001.

His wife, Fauziah Piut, and former deputy director Lim Lam Beng, however, were found not guilty and were discharged and acquitted of all charges.

Judge Abu Bakar Manat sentenced him to eight years’ jail for each of the 12 offences, with the jail terms to run concurrently, while the various fines will run separately.

He allowed the defence counsel’s application for a stay of the jail sentence and fine payments pending an appeal to the High Court.

Ag Tahir is currently released on the existing bail conditions.
