Spotless toilets now a must for eateries to keep licences

PETALING JAYA: Local authorities have been instructed to begin promoting a new ruling to ensure the cleanliness of toilets in food outlets.

Educational enforcement has already been ongoing from 2025, giving operators more than a year to understand the requirements and raise any concerns, the Housing and Local Government Ministry said.

Under the ruling, toilets at all food outlets have to be in full working condition, have dry floors, proper cleaning scheduled and provide soap and other basic hygiene facilities.

The ministry said City Hall and several city councils have already started implementing the ruling to ensure BMW (clean, attractive and fragrant) standards this year, with the process still ongoing.

Those who do not meet standards face having their licences suspended or not renewed.

“The main challenges faced by operators involve cost constraints and space limitations, particularly in older premises where toilet structures require high upgrade costs or lack sufficient space,” the ministry said.

It said non-compliant operators would be issued notices and given reasonable time to rectify the problems before action is taken to suspend their business licences.

It added that the ministry was monitoring the situation to better understand the challenges faced by operators and would consider suitable support measures once full enforcement begins.
