‘Make Tamil compulsory in school’

A PROMINENT Indian leader in Johor has called for the Tamil language and literature subjects to be made compulsory at secondary school level, Makkal Osai reported.

Yayasan Sultanah Rogayah chairman Datuk Sugumaran Raman made the call during the Johor Tamil Educators Social Development Association’s literary festival recently.

The festival also featured a campaign to encourage Indian families to send their children to Tamil schools.

Sugumaran who spoke at the event said the association led by Nadarajah C. Kalimuthu, played an important role in increasing student numbers at Tamil schools and preserving their long-term future.

Elevating the two subjects as compulsory for Tamil students in secondary schools must be the next challenge to be taken up by the association, he said.
