SEREMBAN: Police have recorded statements from 49 people in their investigation of sensitive issues involving race, religion and royalty (3R) issues following Negri Sembilan's recent political crisis.
State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad (pic) said the probe centres on several social media posts and statements that have been deemed provocative.
"Following the lodging of police reports, we are probing several posts which seem to be seditious, defamatory and which touch on 3R issues which have also gone viral.
"Upon completion, the investigation papers will be referred to prosecutors for further instructions," he said in a statement on Friday (May 8).
DCP Alzafny said the investigations are being carried out under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for committing seditious acts, Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 505(B) for publishing or circulating any statement which can cause fear or alarm to the public.
Offenders convicted under the Sedition Act can be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed up to three years.
For offences under Section 500 and 505(B), offenders can be imprisoned up to two years or fined or both if found guilty.
The cases are also being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or network services to disseminate obscene, false, threatening or offensive content.
Offenders face a fine of not more than RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years or both upon conviction.
"The police would like to remind the public not to make any statements or share content that could cause provocation, disturb public peace or which touch on 3R issues.
"The public is also advised to always adhere to the law and to not spread rumours which could affect harmony and stability," he added.
