> A food safety dispute involving an eatery serving rainbow trout as salmon has sparked controversy in China.
China Press reported that a customer, who paid 349 yuan (RM201) for a buffet session, had filed a lawsuit seeking compensation of 10 times the meal cost.
She alleged that the restaurant in Zhengzhou, Henan province, had used freshwater rainbow trout as a substitute for seawater salmon for sashimi, raising concerns over potential parasite infection risks.
Both trout and salmon belong to the Salmonidae family and share a similar streamlined body shape, as well as pinkish to orange-red flesh derived from a crustacean-rich diet.
A seafood industry insider noted that farmed freshwater rainbow trout in China typically costs about half the price of salmon, meaning lower-priced sushi outlets may sometimes misrepresent trout as salmon.
Experts also cautioned that eating raw freshwater fish carries a risk of parasitic infection.
