Johor to gazette over 500 additional parking bays

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government plans to gazette more than 500 parking bays in commercial areas to address the issue of Malaysians parking their vehicles for extended periods to commute to Singapore for work.

Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said this was to address the shortage of parking spaces in several areas.

"This parking issue has been raised multiple times. In some locations, individuals park their vehicles for up to 16 hours a day while they work in Singapore, including in areas where no there are no parking charges.

"The state government is working to gazette several parking areas around Johor Baru, Pasir Gudang, Kulai and Iskandar Puteri facing this issue," he said in a press conference on the sidelines of the state assembly meeting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar here on Wednesday (May 6).

Mohd Jafni said that once gazetted, new parking regulations could be introduced, including time limits and possible payment mechanisms for vehicles parked for longer than two to three hours.

"We will also identify and coordinate parking areas suitable for locals working in Singapore to leave their vehicles," he said.
