SSM deputy CEO pleads not guilty to receiving RM50,000 bribe from Hamzah's son

KUALA LUMPUR: The Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) deputy CEO claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of receiving RM50,000, without consideration, from the son of Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, eight years ago.

Khuzairi Yahaya, 55, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin.

"I plead not guilty. I claim trial," he said here on Thursday (March 12).

According to the charge sheet, Khuzairi, who was charged in his capacity as the deputy CEO of registration and business services, allegedly received a valuable item without consideration, which was RM50,000 in cash, from Muhammad Faisal Hamzah, who has a link to his official duty.

The offence was allegedly committed at SSM headquarters near here in May 2018.

The accused was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of two years imprisonment or fine or both, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamry proposed a RM15,000 bail and asked the court to seize the accused's passport.

He said the accused should report his attendance to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) each month pending the disposal of the case.

Lawyer Muhamad Aizat Fakri, who represented the accused, did not object.

Judge Suzana then allowed bail at RM15,000 and imposed the additional conditions.

The case is fixed for mention on April 20.
