Johor keeping tabs on 540 students in Middle East amid Iran conflict

JOHOR BARU: The Johor government is monitoring updates on the well-being of some 540 local students studying in two countries in the Middle East, says state Islamic affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid.

He said presently there were 310 students in Egypt and 210 students in Jordan.

"We are closely monitoring the situation via our two embassies in these countries since the conflict erupted in the Middle East, involving the United States and Israel attacking Iran," he said in a statement posted on Facebook on Monday (March 2).

Mohd Fared said, besides being in touch with the embassies, the state government was also in touch with student representatives to keep constantly updated about the situation there.

"We will take the necessary steps and action based on the official statements made by the Malaysian embassies there," he added.

He said that the state government urged students to follow all instructions and security guidelines set by the local authorities and the Malaysian embassies.

Mohd Fared also urged parents not to panic and to get information via official channels.

"The state government will continue to prioritise the welfare and safety of all students from Johor," he said, expressing hope that the situation would de-escalate and peace could be restored.
