PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has consented to flying the Jalur Gemilang at Dataran Selangor from Aug 26 to Sept 17 in conjunction with Malaysia’s 69th National Day celebrations.
In a statement issued by Istana Alam Shah on Wednesday (Aug 26) following a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Selangor, the ruler emphasised that the Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of national unity that belongs to all Malaysians.
"Although we differ in race, religion, language, political beliefs, and background, the Jalur Gemilang reminds us that we remain citizens of the same nation," Sultan Sharafuddin said, adding that the flag never distinguishes between ethnic groups or religious faiths.

He stressed that while flying thousands of flags during National Day month is easy, the far greater task is building a Malaysia where every citizen genuinely feels respected, accepted, and proud.
The Sultan called on the younger generation to be taught respect for diverse cultures and urged leaders to lead by example through simplicity, tolerance, and compassion—rather than using differences to divide the public.
"Independence is not merely to be celebrated, and the flag is not merely to be flown," he added. "The true value of both lies in our ability to preserve a nation where its people can live together in peace, respect one another, and remain united."
