Selangor Sultan warns royal relatives against abusing status for personal gain

KLANG: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has warned members of the state royal family against exploiting their royal status to deceive others for personal gain.

His Royal Highness stressed that royal status did not give anyone the right to act as they pleased, reminding family members to respect the law and comply with all regulations.

"We have a responsibility to protect the reputation of the Selangor royal family and institution. Every family member is accountable for their conduct and actions, as the behaviour of one individual can affect public perceptions of the entire royal family.

"The way we conduct ourselves, interact with society and fulfil our responsibilities must reflect the dignity and integrity of the royal family and institution," His Royal Highness said at a royal tea reception with members of the royal family in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of His Royal Highness's reign at Padang Mahkota, Istana Alam Shah, here on Tuesday (Oct 20).

Also present were Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah and his wife, Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini Abdul Aziz.

The Sultan also urged family members to maintain strong bonds, avoid hostility and prevent minor disagreements from causing divisions within the extended royal family.

His Royal Highness said differences of opinion and misunderstandings should be resolved wisely and amicably, without spreading false stories, provoking disputes or making hurtful remarks.

"Be mindful of your words and manners, including when using social media and practise mutual understanding, tolerance and forgiveness.

"I also urge family members to support and care for one another. We should not gather only for ceremonies and celebrations but also offer help and support when our relatives face difficulties," the Sultan said.

Sultan Sharafuddin also called for the values of compassion, responsibility and mutual respect between older and younger generations to be nurtured and passed down to future generations.

At the same time, the Sultan also expressed delight at the attendance of nearly 1,200 members of the Selangor royal family, saying the Silver Jubilee celebration provided a meaningful opportunity to strengthen family ties.

"Some of my relatives who are here this afternoon are people I have not seen for a long time, while others belong to the younger generation who have now reached adulthood. Your presence means a great deal to me.

"This gathering not only brings me joy but also reminds us of our shared responsibility to preserve family harmony and the dignity of the Selangor royal institution," His Royal Highness said. – Bernama
