PM and family among Johor eatery’s VIP patrons

JOHOR BARU: Known as the “go-to” place for local delicacies, Sedap Corner has attracted people from all over – including VIPs seeking traditional favourites when in Johor.

Even the Prime Minister has passed through its doors.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was with his family for a short vacation to Johor at the beginning of the month, dropped by the shop.

Patrons were pleasantly surprised to see Anwar and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail walk in, and many took the opportunity to greet and pose for snapshots with them.

“We were quite nervous as we were only informed of his visit a few days prior, and prepared seating for about 30 people,” said managing director Alisa Lamlertkittikul.

She said the VIP guests were warm and friendly, taking time to chat with customers at the restaurant.

Alisa revealed that the Prime Minister had ordered mee rebus and teh tarik, while his family, including his grandchildren, sampled various kuih during their 90-minute stopover.

For almost 39 years, Sedap Corner along Jalan Abdul Samad here has been serving a wide selection of Malay kuih and local favourites, even drawing foreign tourists.

It is well-known for its wide variety of traditional kuih such as seri muka, kuih lapis, bingka ubi, talam pandan, kuih koci and ondeh-ondeh that is produced in the central kitchen.

“At one time, we had almost 20 types of kuih made fresh daily. These days, about 15 types of kuih are made to cut down on labour and ensure quality,” Alisa said.

The restaurant offers over 80 dishes, with the favourites being laksa Johor, mee rebus, mee bandung, asam pedas and beef kway teow.
