JOHOR BARU: The Johor state government is looking into standardising the rental rates for Ramadan bazaar slots organised by private groups, says state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.
The housing and local government committee chairman said the state government had recently capped the rate for Ramadan bazaar rental lots under local councils at RM500.
"For those organised by local councils, we have capped it at RM500 starting this year, but it does not apply to those organised by private groups.
"We are now looking into having private Ramadan bazaars set a reasonable standardised rate starting 2027," he said at a press conference after visiting the Nusa Bestari Ramadan bazaar here on Thursday (Feb 19).
He said currently, the rental rate for slots under private organisers could go as high as RM5,000 each.
"Traders are willing to pay such a high rate as they know they could earn a lot from the bazaar, with some earning as high as RM50,000 a month.
"However, we still feel that there is a need to standardise it and we are looking at setting a rate that allows organisers to get a maximum of 30% profit," he said.
Mohd Jafni said that of the 224 Ramadan bazaar locations approved this year, half involved private organisers.
