PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his deepest appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts in promoting peace globally.
The Malaysian Prime Minister described his exchanges with Modi as those “between true friends”, characterised by trust and understanding.
"And therefore, I must take this opportunity to express my regards and thanks to him for his firm commitment to support all peace efforts throughout the world, be it in the Ukraine-Russia conflict or in the case of the Middle East, particularly in Gaza.
"His commitment to support the peace process is unequivocal and certainly," said Anwar during a joint press conference with Modi at the Seri Perdana Complex here on Sunday (Feb 8).
Modi is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia starting Saturday (Feb 7) at Anwar’s invitation, reciprocating the Malaysian leader’s visit to India in August 2024.
"I immediately agree to support the decision of the government of India to open a consulate of India in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah," said Anwar.
The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster enhanced cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation of friendship since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1957, and the elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.
In 2025, total trade between Malaysia and India reached RM79.49bil (US$18.59bil).
Malaysia’s total exports to India amounted to RM52.30bil (US$12.24bil) and total imports amounted to RM27.19bil (US$6.35bil).
