Bersatu to plug ‘mutiny on the bounty’ by mooting Hamzah’s sacking tonight, say sources

PETALING JAYA: The final push to remove Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin from Bersatu’s top ranks is expected on Sunday (Feb 8) night at Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s home, following what party insiders describe as a coordinated effort to counter an internal “mutiny”.

Although billed as a religious meeting and dinner ahead of Ramadan, sources said the gathering of Bersatu leaders at party president Muhyiddin’s residence is likely to carry far heavier political weight.

An insider said tonight’s gathering will be Muhyiddin’s second meeting with party leaders since Friday (Feb 6), as he moves to consolidate support amid growing tensions at the top of the party.

“Last Friday, Muhyiddin briefed all information chiefs and gave them instructions.

“He also said PAS should be told about Hamzah,” the source said when contacted.

According to the insider, tonight’s meeting represents a step up from last week’s briefing, involving Bersatu division leaders and supreme council members aligned with Muhyiddin.

“There have been reports of complaints lodged with the disciplinary board over what is being described as a ‘mutiny’ led by Hamzah,” the insider claimed.

“At tonight’s meeting, one of us is expected to propose that Hamzah be sacked.

“If the proposal receives backing from division leaders, it will then be taken to a Bersatu supreme council meeting at a later date,” the source added.

Another senior party leader confirmed that a decision on Hamzah’s position is likely to be reached before Ramadan, in an effort to contain internal divisions within Perikatan Nasional.

“The cracks are already visible. Moving before Ramadan is seen as necessary to stop the cracks within Perikatan Nasional,” the source said.

Hamzah, who serves as opposition leader, has yet to publicly respond to the claims.

Muhyiddin and Bersatu leaders have also not issued any official statement ahead of tonight’s meeting.

In recent months, the fallout between Muhyiddin and Hamzah has been out in the open, with both camps hatching up their plans.

Last week, it was reported that Bersatu deputy president Hamzah was summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary board over multiple complaints alleging attempts to sabotage the party’s 2025 annual general assembly.

The disciplinary board had stated in a notice dated Feb 6, that this was the second time that Hamzah had been summoned. He was first summoned in October last year, to which he did not turn up.

A complaint dated Sept 30 last year alleged that Hamzah had conspired with several party figures such as Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, to disrupt the 2025 assembly.

Wan Saiful was later sacked from the party.
