JB cops nab 16 motorcyclists for reckless road stunts


JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested 16 motorcyclists for performing dangerous stunts on public roads during a late-night operation across the city.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said an operation was carried out around Jalan Skudai Pantai Lido, Jalan Ibrahim, Jalan Stulang Laut, Jalan Ibrahim Sultan, Jalan Jim Quee and Jalan Lingkaran Dalam from 6pm on Friday (Jan 23) until 2am on Monday (Jan 26).

"These locations were identified as hotspots for youths performing dangerous stunts, including wheelies, and other risky actions that endanger themselves and other road users.

"Sixteen local males aged between 17 and 33 were arrested for performing dangerous stunts on public roads, causing disturbance to other road users," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 27).

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"If convicted, they can be fined a minimum of RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000, and face imprisonment of up to five years.

"One of those arrested was also found to be using a falsified engine number and is being investigated under Section 108(3)(e) of the same Act.

"If convicted, he can be fined a minimum of RM5,000 and not more than RM20,000, or jailed for between one and five years," he said.

ACP Raub said four others were arrested after they were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

"They are being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the same Act, which carries a fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, imprisonment of up to two years and a driving licence suspension of two years, if convicted.

"A total of 61 motorcycles were also seized and 189 summonses for various offences were issued during the operation," he said.

ACP Raub urged the public to help the authorities curb illegal racing and road hooliganism by notifying the district police headquarters hotline at 07-2182222.
