Cops launch special ops in Seberang Perai after remand inmate flees hospital


GEORGE TOWN: Police are tracking down a prisoner who escaped while receiving treatment at the Sungai Bakap Hospital (HSB).

Penang deputy police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said a report was lodged by a personnel guarding the remand inmate, who fled custody at about 3.45pm on Friday (Jan 23).

"While attempting to flee, the suspect was wearing blue and white hospital attire," he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 25).

DCP Mohd Alwi identified the suspect as Clemont A/L Siluasegram, 47. He had been brought to the hospital on Jan 22 for treatment after experiencing a seizure.

The suspect was in custody under Section 457/379A of the Penal Code for robbery and motorcycle theft in the Sungai Bakap area.

Following the escape, police launched Ops Tutup to track the fugitive.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 223 of the Penal Code for a public servant negligently allowing an escape, and Section 224 for intentionally escaping from lawful detention.
