MCMC detects over 600 fake posts on global energy crisis since end of March

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister and Government Spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified over 600 fake posts about the global energy crisis between March 29 and today (May 6).

He said the posts mainly involved sensitive economic issues, including fuel prices, the Strait of Hormuz toll issue, and the wider global supply crisis.

“Based on MCMC’s investigations, we cannot rule out coordinated efforts to spread false information, known as Coordinated Inauthentic Behaviour (CIB).

“This is because some posts use identical graphics, appear around the same time, and aim for wide distribution,” Fahmi said at his weekly press conference at Angkasapuri on Wednesday (May 6).

He warned that authorities are taking stern action against those spreading such misinformation.

Fahmi said five cases have been brought to court, and eight others have received compounds.

“The total compounds issued amount to RM200,000, which is RM25,000 per person,” he said.

He added that the remaining cases are still under investigation or have been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further advice and follow-up by the MCMC.
