Action against over 3,600 overloaded lorries shows concerning trend, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: Action was taken against 3,604 overloaded heavy vehicles between October and December last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the figures were recorded during a special enforcement operation conducted by the Road Transport Department from Oct 14 to Dec 31.

Among heavy vehicles designed to carry loads below 7.5 tonnes, 527 were found to be overloaded by more than 70%. Another 549 exceeded the limit by between 35% and 70%, while 655 were overloaded by between 10% and 35%.

For vehicles permitted to carry loads of between 7.5 tonnes and 32 tonnes, 152 exceeded the limit by more than 50%, 125 by between 35% and 50%, and 916 by between 10% and 35%.

As for heavy vehicles allowed to carry loads exceeding 32 tonnes, 40 were overloaded by more than 50%, 167 by between 25% and 50%, and 473 by between 10% and 25%.

“These statistics show that a significant number of cases involve serious overloading, which can affect road safety, vehicle stability, braking performance and road infrastructure durability,” Loke said during question time on Wednesday (Jan 21).

He was responding to a question by Cha Kee Chin, who asked about enforcement action and overloading rates during JPJ operations in the last quarter of 2025.

On road safety trends, Loke said data from the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department showed a decline in fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles.

Police figures indicated 232 fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles in 2023, rising to 260 in 2024, before falling to 163 last year. He clarified that the figures reflect accidents involving heavy vehicles and do not necessarily indicate fault.

“The reduction nonetheless suggests that enforcement efforts have helped lower fatal accident rates, in line with the government’s objective of protecting road users,” he said.

Separately, Loke said the High Speed-Weigh in Motion (HS-WIM) system would be rolled out soon, with 10 locations already identified. The system has been installed at two locations so far.

“We will announce the rollout soon, and there will be a transition period,” he added.
