Lorry driver killed after skidding into drain near Ayer Hitam school


KLUANG: A driver died on the spot after a lorry driven by him skidded into a drain near SMK Seri Lalang, Jalan Ayer Hitam near here on Thursday (Aug 20).

Ayer Hitam Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohamed Shamin Mohamed Salikin said they received an emergency call in regard to the incident at 1.29pm.

He said 15 firemen from the Ayer Hitam and Kluang Fire Stations with a Fire Rapid Tender (FRT) vehicle and a 4WD truck were deployed to the scene.

“The lorry carrying a load of sawdust was travelling from Kedah to Kluang when the incident happened,’’ Mohamed Samin said in a statement.

He said the driver was trapped in his seat and firemen used special equipment to retrieve the body; the victim was pronounced dead by the medical team from the Health Ministry.

Shamin said the victim was identified as a 50-year-old A. Shanmugam and the lorry assistant G. Dana Gopal, 25, broke his arms.

“The victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action," he said and the operation led by Ramli Said ended at 3.45pm.
