Collision claims two lives in Kota Kinabalu


KOTA KINABALU: Two people were killed, and five others were injured in an accident at a traffic light intersection along the Kota Kinabalu-Papar road early Sunday morning (Jan 4).

The incident occurred at 4am when a car, driven by a man with four young passengers, aged 17 to 21, collided with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. A 36-year-old man was driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle with a 27-year-old female passenger.

According to Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton, a 21-year-old passenger in the car was declared dead at the scene, while a 17-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The driver and two other passengers in the car sustained serious injuries, while the female passenger in the four-wheel-drive was injured. The driver of the four-wheel-drive escaped with minor injuries.

Initial investigations revealed that the car's driver had entered the lane occupied by the four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Supt Sammy stated that the case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous and reckless driving causing death.

He advised road users to adhere to traffic regulations and urged witnesses of the accident to come forward and assist with the investigation. Witnesses can contact the investigating officer, Insp Saparia Ladoni, at 019-8095133.
