KUALA LUMPUR: Kampung Baru can rebrand itself as a tourist attraction as it is a historical Malay landmark in the heart of the city, says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
The Titiwangsa MP said Kampung Baru should capitalise on its rich Malay culture and heritage and shift the focus away from any negative perception.
"There are three ways to approach this. Firstly, we, the children from Kampung Baru, must ensure the area is clean where each landowner places an emphasis on cleanliness and landscaping.
"Secondly, must also ensure safety as there should not be unhealthy activities taking place here such as drugs or snatch theft.
"Thirdly, non-governmental organisations need to carry out programmes like today, where we had a fun run or perhaps organise art contests or work with others, especially with Visit Malaysia 2026 approaching," he said, adding everyone has to play a role especially with the are surrounded with rapid development.
Johari, who is also Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, said this during his speech at the opening ceremony of the Citrawarna Kampong Bharu 125th year near the Saloma Link here on Sunday (Dec 21).
He added that problems surrounding Kampung Sungai Baru is due to poor development planning and not because local residents are greedy or ungrateful.
He also pointed out that Kampung Baru land was gifted by the Sultan of Selangor to enable Malays to settle in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and this history must be preserved and highlighted.
Johari also said he hoped that developers would fulfil their promise to complete the houses for former residents who have moved out over the past eight years.
"Residents are waiting for houses, not for developers' profit," he said.
He added that Kampung Baru residents should be given the choice to develop their land or maintain their existing homes without coercion.
"Kampung Baru is a priceless asset. We take care of it, we bring it to life and we highlight its historical value. That is the real rebranding we want," he said.
