GOF seizes untaxed cigarettes worth RM400,000 in Tumpat

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 200,000 sticks of untaxed cigarettes and a car worth a total of RM400,000 during Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan in Kampung Kok Bedullah, Tumpat, early Sunday (July 26).

GOF Southeast Brigade commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the seizure was made around 2am by the Strike Force from Company C, GOF Battalion 9, Kuala Terengganu, together with the Kelantan Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

He said GOF personnel on motorcycle patrol saw a suspicious Proton Preve car in Kampung Geting before the driver sped off for about two kilometres.

"The vehicle crashed into an irrigation canal in Kampung Kok Bedullah before the driver fled. Checks found several gunny sacks containing 200,000 sticks of suspected untaxed cigarettes," he said in a statement.

Ahmad Radzi said the seizure included the vehicle valued at RM26,000 and contraband cigarettes worth RM374,000. It was handed over to the Pengkalan Kubor Customs Office for further action under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.

He added that investigations are ongoing to locate the escaped suspect and identify the vehicle's registered owner. - Bernama
